NOTHING LIKE A FRIEND

Nothing Like A Friend - Cover 1000.png

I consider my friends family. They enrich my life and challenge me to be better. They’re there when the going gets tough and celebrate my successes with me. (Hell, I’m not getting rich writing songs, but my friends remind me I’m richer for the effort.)

I’ve long wanted to celebrate my friends in a song, and there have been many friends who inspired that effort. Then, the tipping point! A long-awaited meeting with the guy who does my videos and website, Grant Maloy Smith. It propelled me to write this song – and have him sing it (Grant is a Billboard Top 10 charting American roots recording artist). He also produced it.

Thanks to my regular producer, Marty, and my lyric-writing guru, Kay, for helping me hone the lyric so it wasn’t trite. And thanks to my wife, Jackie, who listened to my initial music and said, “Hmmm… I think you ripped off Randy Newman’s “You’ve Got a Friend In Me.” Oops! Back to the drawing board and the keyboard. In memory of my “ever-present” friend and music partner, Ron.

Hope you enjoy a different style of song from me.

LYRIC
Nothing like a friend to make things right
Someone you can count on day or night
If you need a hand

I’ll do whatever I can
To pick you up and get you back in the fight

Nothing like a friend to have around
When your world is turning upside down
If you see me in pain

I don’t have to explain
You hear what I’m saying without a sound

We’ve shared a lot of good times
And we’ve laughed and cried
We didn’t win them all, but I was by your side
We learned so much together
With all we’ve been through
No two friends are truer friends than me and you

Nothing like a friend to set you free
Accepting you for who you want to be
There’s no pretending

and no one gets offended
Even when we might just disagree

We shared a lot of good times
And we laughed and cried
We didn’t win them all, but you were by my side
We learned so much together
With all we’ve been through
No two friends are truer friends than me and you
